Golf Holiday in the UK

There are certainly plenty of exciting cheap holidays abroad. However, there are some holidays that will have you shell out extra money. One such type of vacation is a golf holiday. Obviously, this kind of holiday isn’t cheap and will require you to spend more money than what you usually spend for a regular holiday. However, if you love playing golf and enjoy this sport, this type of holiday is definitely worth your money.

A group of us have started taking a golf break between September and October. For the last couple of years six of us have flown out of Bristol to either Malaga or Seville airport and played 5 courses in 5 days. Since the euro has risen in value and the depression (ok call it a recession but we all know it’s a depression) has started to really bite, we decided to look at some alternatives closer to home.

We all put forward our suggestions for venue, accommodation and in particular the courses we though would be the right kind of challenge for us all. We have golfers ranging from 13 up to 24 handicap, with the 24 handicapper being automatically reallocated a 22 before we even set one foot on the course (not that I’m bitter or anything!) so a reasonably broad range of club players. My own suggestion was for a selection of courses in Devon and staying in lodges at one of the courses.

Another suggestion was for some amazing courses in the Spanish desert. Basically the fairways were strips of green bordered by rubble and rocks – not the friendliest rough you would ever see, but an amazing sight – and guaranteed warm weather. We put that one in reserve for when times get a little easier.

We settled by almost unanimous decision on the package centred around Swansea and a huge thank you to the bandit that is Simon Palmer for arranging the whole thing. Yes, Swansea in October – we are completely barking mad! Anyway, despite some misgivings about it always raining in Wales regardless of the time of year, that was our golf break choice for this year.

The weather forecast in advance of us going wasn’t brilliant, and I’d already had an unexpectedly expensive start to the week, having had to buy a new pair of ecco golf shoes, as my ancient Footjoy ones had finally fallen apart. Nevertheless, we headed off down to the first challenge in our week’s golf holiday – Pennard. The day started off dull and we topped up on energy at the Magor services, just over the toll bridge on the M4 heading into Wales. (Actually I thought the breakfast there was OK, despite being slightly pricey, but some members of the party couldn’t finish their coffee!)

Still, to fit in five courses in five days we had to make some sacrifices and the Magor Motorway Services was the first of these.
